Srinagar: The onset of Chillai Kalan — the harshest 40-day period of winter in Kashmir — brought fresh rainfall in the plains and snowfall in higher reaches of the Valley, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures on Tuesday.
Several areas of north and central Kashmir witnessed light to moderate snow, while Srinagar and other low-lying regions received intermittent rain. The fresh spell of precipitation has intensified the cold wave, with night temperatures dipping further below the seasonal average.
Officials from the Meteorological Department said the weather conditions are consistent with Chillai Kalan, a period traditionally marked by freezing temperatures, snow accumulation, and icy conditions. “More light rain and snowfall are expected in the coming days, especially in higher altitudes,” an official said.
The cold spell has affected daily life, with residents relying heavily on heating devices. Water supply lines in some areas have frozen, while road connectivity to higher reaches was temporarily disrupted due to snowfall.
Despite the inconvenience, the precipitation has brought relief to farmers and horticulturists, as snowfall is crucial for replenishing water sources ahead of the summer season.
Chillai Kalan, which began on December 21, will last for 40 days, followed by Chillai Khurd and Chillai Bache, shorter cold phases marking the gradual end of winter.
