Srinagar, June 12: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday met Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and expressed serious concerns regarding the proposed closure of Srinagar International Airport for maintenance works from October 1 to October 16.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted the potential inconvenience and economic impact that the airport shutdown could have on residents, tourists, businesses, and the overall travel sector in Jammu and Kashmir. He urged the Civil Aviation Ministry to explore alternative arrangements or reconsider the timing of the maintenance works to minimize disruption during a crucial travel period.
Omar Abdullah emphasized that Srinagar Airport serves as a vital lifeline for the Union Territory, connecting Kashmir with major cities across the country. Any prolonged suspension of flight operations, he said, could adversely affect tourism, trade, medical travel, and the movement of passengers.

The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of ensuring that infrastructure upgrades and safety improvements are carried out while keeping public convenience in mind. He requested the ministry to assess whether the maintenance schedule could be modified or phased in a manner that reduces the impact on air connectivity.
The proposed closure is linked to runway maintenance and repair works at Srinagar International Airport, with airport authorities planning a temporary suspension of flight operations during the designated period. Reports indicate that flight services may remain suspended for around two weeks to facilitate the infrastructure upgrades.
Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu assured the Chief Minister that the concerns raised by the Jammu and Kashmir government would be examined carefully and that all possible measures would be considered to minimize inconvenience to the public.
The meeting reflects the J&K government’s efforts to safeguard connectivity and ensure that essential transportation services remain accessible for residents and visitors alike.
